I (HEART) INDIA: Making Connections in Kerala

Facebook May 11, 2017

By David Samuel Robbins

This is not a particularly "artistic" or stand-out professional photograph - but it's always felt a bit precious to me, the way these total strangers, busy with their own lives and with each other, opened up to share a few moments with me, and how totally authentic and fully present they seem.

I have spent much of my life working as an unexpected guest and observer / recorder of other people's lives, and I am continually amazed by their generosity of spirit and ready embrace of spontaneous cooperation.

On countless occasions, it has seemed to me that the people with the least to share are often the most generous, and that natural grace and bearing and egoless dignity are accessible to everyone, but can't be bought at any price.

India demands much from her visitors, but for those who can embrace and accept her on her own terms, the rewards are sublime.

Malabar Coast, Arabian Sea, Kerala, India.
